House Speaker Expects to Avoid Government Shutdown

Congressional leaders met with President Biden to discuss federal funding and emergency foreign aid.

A continuing resolution to keep the government funded may resolve a legislative stalemate between the House and Senate. After meeting with President Biden at the White House, House Speaker Mike Johnson said, “We have to take care of America’s needs first.” He added, “The catastrophe at the border is affecting everyone.”

The president has been persistent in requesting foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel, and other humanitarian funding. The Senate recently approved a foreign aid package that the House has refused to take up, as the lower chamber’s priority is on U.S. border security.

Speaker Johnson has maintained that President Biden could take action to prevent migrant crossings without additional legislation. The House majority is also concerned with the rate of federal spending and the increasing national debt.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker Johnson and other congressional leaders as they consider measures to fund the federal government.
  • For the president and administration officials as they seek to continue sending aid to foreign allies.
  • For the leaders and people of Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza as they navigate the current armed conflicts.
